Smell- III: The Smell of Sleep

Each time I think about us, I think about the smell of your sleep lingering in the bedroom. As soon I wake up, I wouldn’t smell a thing. But as I return to the bedroom from the bathroom, I wouldn’t have to see you there, lying splattered like a bat on the bed cover, to know that you were there- I could feel the air telling me that. Does everyone have a smell in their sleep? You definitely did. What was it, a smell of your drool, or your farts, or your sweat? Or was it the smell of your thoughts and dreams that went unsaid as you lay down next to me? Was that what I thought I was smelling- the perfumes of all those men and women, whom you claimed you had loved before me, and along with me, all arising from you, as you slept, trying to get away from your dreams as far as possible.
Somehow, that smell was the sign of our intimacy. What I couldn’t find while we were in bed, naked, or close to naked or what I searched for in the movement of your eyes as you slept, that I could whiff in the air, in the early morning. Floating in the air, and making its way to the windows and under the doors, it would try to crawl into obscurity, and yet, never could.
All the walks that you would go for, those narrow paths that you talked about- between the crooked buildings- do you gather the scents from there- the smells of cigarette stubs and piss and rotting vegetables? Or the smell of salty water from the oceans that you said you would like to swim in? Do I smell tomato peels smoking on a dry pan, just a tinge of burn on them? Or is that the smell of the first froth of shampoo when you wash your hair after a long bus ride- the fumes of diesel still breathing? Or is it just the smell of voyages, of journeys, and of short jogs across the park, the short jogs that your thoughts go for, trying to escape the mundane and to seek solace in things that never were?

Sleep, you who give this room this vast definition of fantasies and daydream; but how tragic it is that you cannot smell what you leave behind for me to devour in the mornings! And yet, I only hope that when you go to bed alone, our jumble of hair in the washbasin- that curly mass of hair and facewash froth- shall also find its way into that conglomerate of smells you carry around. Each dawn trying to escape, and yet sometime as you sleep, they return, unable to pretend that they do not hear your beckoning.

The Tune that the Butterfly Sang

She pushed the wild purple flower, trying hard not to break it from it stalk. The bag of vegetables and papayas stood slumped on the ground. Beneath the bush, there was no telling where the ground sloped towards the playground. Her feet were firmly set on the ground, and she parted the bush aside, and craned. Any time now, she thought, the little iron bell would be rung by the ayah and the kids would come milling out. How would she spot her girl, she wondered. But another intuition suggested that she wouldn’t have a hard time spotting her. The first intuition was what drove her to the edge of the road, sneaking behind wild bushes, peering into the school grounds, on her way back home from the market. Today, she thought, she would see her little one in another world. The bell rung for the morning break. Ayahs in sari and cardigans instead of blouses walked around the ground as kids tottered out. 4 to 10 year olds, in maroon sweaters, and blue skirts and pant, bumping into each other...

Lights and Memories

For the past 23 years of my life, Diwali was one day that did not have a fixed meaning. Diwali was about 'flower pots' and sparklers and gift boxes of fireworks. There were photographs by achan and warnings by amma. There would be sweaters and stockings under my pattu pavadai. There would be visits from friends and the new dress thrill. There would be the 'colour dress' excitement at school the next day. There were comparisons of the paunches that were the evidence of a couple of days of gluttony. There were tales of bravado and escapades and all that bluff. That was childhood atop a hill in Ooty. Teenage Diwalis were all about crackers, fireworks, lakshmi vedi, sara vedi, sweets which had ten times ghee than it normally would have, neighbours walking in all through the day and the dining table being filled with sweets, prasadams and an occasional chrysanthemum flower. All night long there would be the far away din of fireworks, and the scream of a child whose joy j...

on love come and gone

He was an artist, she a dreamer. One would think that that would mean that they were perfect for each other. He was always looking for beauty; she searched for happiness, love and beauty in people around her. He fell in love and withdrew away from it, when the beauty ended; for her, love was relentless affair, never ending, filled with laughter, happy embarrassing pictures and long nights listening to Passenger and Lana Del Ray. He backed off with the calm and poise of someone refusing extra servings of an extremely sweet dessert; she took the dessert twice, thrice, and even more, till her brain could not handle anymore sugar (and it eventually sickened her). He did not understand why anyone would want something that would come back to hurt them; she did not understand how anything could be called life, if it did not bring a few heartbreaks with it. He would call silly all those little things she did for him, including leaving a note below his pillow; for her, little things were the...
